Open Up Your Mind

How open-minded are we, really? As we go on each day, we always try to keep our minds open to possibilities. Life is about learning and having an open mind can make us ready to see greater opportunities that always a limited mind denies.

But how are we gonna widen our minds? With closed minds, there are possibilities that we miss out a lot of things.  I think it’s not just ideas we are going to miss out, but also opportunities that will bring us laughter, happiness, love and more possibilities for us to enjoy.

For me, it’s not difficult to be an open-minded person only if we are flexible and understanding. Do I have an open mind? To some extent, yes I do. I understand, I am flexible and I believe that flexibility and positive expectations draw up possibilities of good results.  I always listen to people and I don’t neglect people.  Being open-minded means deep patience, though it requires a lot of practice and energy to develop patience. Still, I can manage to control my mind and actions.

Oftentimes, I do random things that exercise my mind.  Simple things that help me think broader and smarter to make me more open.  I sometimes listen to music which I don’t like at first, but if I keep an open mind, I can still find it interesting. I sing too, and I find it an opportunity to express more of me. I watch movies/tv shows that I don’t usually watch. Try it, really it is thought provoking.

I like to learn about different people and lifestyles.  It stimulates appreciation.  I always try to eat food I have never tried.  I always think it’s healthy because I keep an open mind.  I go to the gym not only to build up muscles but to push the limits of my body which I can learn more and expand my mind.  Try anything else that can push your limits. It’s exciting. Sometimes I try to shutdown one of my senses. I can text with both eyes closed. It puts things in a way I am forced to create new ways of doing things I’ve already figured how to do.

Similarly, there are several things you can do to help your mind open. The simple things I do, really help me develop positive frame of mind, encourage creative thinking, good relationship with everyone, clear thoughts and of course broader vision. Let us try our best to develop our skills and enjoy our life with happiness.

In a nutshell, having an open mind is simply seeing things as if it's the first time and thinking about it in new ways. Like the children we once were, we have to deal everything with open minds and fearless spirits believing in our ability to be persistent that we don’t miss out any single opportunity in life.

  4. "... an open mind can make us ready to see greater opportunities that always a limited mind denies." --> Very well-said.

Living life with an open mind is accepting the fact that you do not know everything. Thus, you open up new opportunities for experience.. Having an open mind allows you to change.. to learn.. to grow.

Nice read, Kuya Boni. Kodus! :)

  9. I like to learn about different people and lifestyles. It stimulates appreciation.

I resonate with this Bon! And yes, I agree that part of being open minded when it comes to dealing with people is to be truly patient in listening to them, not just with the words they are saying but also with what their expressions and gestures tell... Another key to really being open minded with others is to always give them the benefit of the doubt. And part of giving them this benefit is to think about their personal background - how was this person raised, his experiences, his educational background, his religious creed, etc... When one seeks to understand why others behave differently, one becomes more generous in giving that essential benefit of the doubt, and in turn keeps an open mind...

I think that to act as if seeing things the first time to have an open mind would also be more fruitful if we are able to conquer and set aside our personal preferences. Doing so would mean to begin on a clean slate - tabula rasa. I had a chance to experience a different culture when for the first time I travelled to Malaysia. The food, the manner of preparing them, the smell (of both food and people), the colors and many other things are different. My lessons in sociology were of great help - I kept a mantra that "culture is relative". Had I been born in a different place, like in Malaysia, I would not see any difference at all. This allowed me to be open minded with what I see. The difference that I see is due to my different culture. And to be able to immerse myself in this different culture, I needed to put aside my set of preferences. That way, I can avoid being indifferent, thus making the trip and the entire experience worthwhile...

Wow, it's been a long time since I have written a comment as long as this. Great article Bon! And great articles always stimulate minds... :)

Bons: ..and appreciating work of others also stimulates mind and broadens thinking..thanks mark for this mind-stimulating comments, appreciated pare.
you’re right. Just like your experience, having an open mind keeps me kicking here in the middle east for almost 4 years . it’s not just about money, it’s also about opportunity to deal with a totally different world, to learn and discover new things . I can immerse. I can adapt. It’s simple, I just got to have my mind widely open.

  13. Being an open minded person helps a lot especially if you're in a field when other people look at every mistake that you do. I just have an open mind not to bully them or anything. Because I know it's not right.

I am also an understanding person. In my previous relationship, I think I was the one with the open mind. And when it was time to let go, I had an open mind that I have to be happy for him as well, and not try to hold him back. :)

Bons: salamat zen sa pagbisita! =)

  14. Yes it's open-mindedness. It's like giving everybody a second chance in life, especially in a country like ours where our voices need to be heard. It breaks prejudices, and that's what makes a difference.

  21. Yeah, being open minded opens new door for us. Not only in terms of our career but it is also a way for us to grow as a person.
Isa sa mga nakakatawang example ko is yung pagkain ng maki, naduduwal pa ko dun nung una, pero ngayon, isa na sya sa mga paborito ko..

Bons: absolutely! ^^ thanks for visiting paul!

  22. In all fairness, I was looking for a big punchline for this post Bon. Haha.. Seryoso pala ito. Pero tama naman yung sinabi mo. Importante talaga ang magkaron ng "open mind" about a lot of things. Siguro corrupted na lang talaga masyado ang isip ko na kapag sinasabi yung "open-mindedness" eh green kagad ang naiisip ko at sasabihin ko "sorry no." Haha.. Sisihin mo na lang yung experiences ko for that. Hehe..

For me having an open mind suggests that one doesn't necessarily have to accept whatever statement the other person is saying but being able to comprehend the entire proposition by putting oneself onto it. If our politicians all have open minds during electoral debates then there shouldn't be clashes of ideas.

Magkakaron siguro ng peace on earth kung lahat ay open minded. ^_^

Bons: Hi emily, how are you na?! thanks again! ^^ i agree on peace on earth hehe. merry christmas!

Tsinelas ko motorsiklo

May bago akong tsinelas! Ever heard about Dupé? No’ng nagbakasyon ako sa Pilipinas, nagkaroon ako ng chance na gamitin ang tsinelas na ‘to =) a friend from Dupe-Philippines gave me a pair of this cool flipflops. And I must say, I like and I enjoy using it. Dupe-Philippines has re-launched the slippers last December 2010; it’s been 4 months now and I think the sales are doing great now. We all know that these days, slippers have been part of our regular fashions, nakakapunta na nga tayo sa mall nang nakatsinelas nalang di ba, pagandahan at papormahan ang labanan.

Setup Helipad for Tomica Doctor Heli

I find a relatively small helicopter from Tomica collection at Robinsons' Toys R-Us for around Php 250. Tomica Doctor Heli, the scale is at 1:167. Though the scale size reads nearly N-scale, it's bigger than the usual n-scale model size. Nevertheless, it still looks nice with my current layout.
